James 1:22-25 may be some of those “uncomfortable” bible verses for you. I confess that it makes me uncomfortable. Every time I read these verses, I get this queasy feeling that I’m not a doer. We Lutherans seem to be more comfortable studying the Word than doing it at times.
Being a doer is different for each of us. Some people can easily speak to large crowds and move them to take action; some can build buildings; the Lord gives each of us different abilities at different times in our lives.
One thing that He definitely did not give you is the gift of “nothing.” You have a talent, an ability, a gift. Often we just have to give something a try and see if it is where we have a talent or not; you’ll be surprised at what you can do I bet.
Trinity LC has need of several different talents, and I’m sure that our members have the necessary gifts. One immediate need is simply somebody to take responsibility for recording and posting our worship services on our web page and making a few CD copies for some of our shut-in members. Yes it takes a little computer savvy, but you don’t need a degree in computer sciences to do this.
But this isn’t the only need, in fact I’m sure I don’t even know all the possible jobs that exist in Trinity right now. Children’s ministry, assisting with the worship service, serving on the building committee; and the trustees are always looking for willing hands to help with things around our property. Perhaps best of all, you could even make up your own job title and give a try at a new ministry that Trinity isn’t even doing right now.
It’s a lot like most sports, it’s a whole lot more fun to be participating than just watching. So let’s participate!
